This week marks 6 years in the bizz for CrossFit Hurstville.
One more year in the books, a range of new experiences, and many more lessons learned.
I want to share with you my 10 biggest lessons from the last 6 years in business:
1. Be a good person first, and a good business person second.
Treat people well. Always. There is no room or reason not too.
2. If you want something bad enough, you MUST go all in.
To succeed, there is no other way. I learnt this at CFH around the 2 year mark. The minute I stepped away from my previous career and went absolutely all in on the business things changed dramatically at CFH.
3. Change is necessary.
It is your job to make the big calls. To take the risks. To have the conversations that most people avoid. Accept it. Confront it. In the end, it results in enormous growth for you as an individual. If things are not working, change things up. Experiment with new ideas. What is the worst that can happen? It doesn’t work and you change it again.
4. Trust your gut.
Do your research. Talk to the right people. Take time to think things through thoroughly. But once all that is done – TRUST YOUR GUT! Hasn’t let me down yet!
5. Get help and get it quick.
Stop trying to do everything yourself and wear all the hats. Learn to delegate. The quicker the better (6 years in and I am still trying to get better at this)
6. Be coachable.
Do not underestimate the value of a good coach. For the knowledge, experience, accountability, guidance, reassurance…. the list goes on. Getting a business coach was a game changer for me.
7. Communicate better.
It is amazing how the right approach, demeanour, tone, and choice of words, can impact the result of a conversation. Stop. Think. Then maybe, Act. With members. With staff. How you communicate is vital to the result you want to achieve.
8. Focus on what is in your control.
Know your competition, but leave it there. Don’t waste time and energy on the rest.
9. Know your numbers, inside out.
This was another game changer for my business. Metrics, metrics, metrics! At the end of the day you are running a business, and business is numbers. If you are not good with numbers find or employ someone who is.
10. Maintain balance in your life.
It is the key to longevity in business. I am only working that one out now. Without it, you will burn out and train yourself to hate what you do. Have boundaries. Have down time. Go on holidays. Give yourself quality time away from the business to make you enjoy and be more effective when you are in it. This is a big area to work on in 2021 for me.
If you are reading this, thank you for being part of the CFH journey.
It is a privilege to be able to share my thoughts with you.
The journey continues….
