“How you do anything is how you do everything”
I wrote this on the whiteboard a few weeks ago. A few seemed to understand while some questioned its validity.
This statement obviously has some logistical inconsistencies especially when taken literally. However, even if this statement is not entirely true, you should act in a way that it is. I’ll discuss this below…
If you applied the same discipline to your obligations at home as you do in the gym, would your life not be better for it? Perhaps you are a focused and detail oriented person in your profession – would your training not benefit from the same intent?
These are but a few examples that demonstrate the value of establishing consistency. If you do one thing well, then why shouldn’t you strive towards the same high standards elsewhere?
Consider that this quote is less about taking the trash out with zeal, or relishing at the fact you get to do the dishes again because this is how you show up to train, and more developing congruence of character.
This quote may also be used to inspire inquiry and self-assessment.
If we take this statement to be true, then it allows us to examine aspects and behaviours of our lifestyles, putting a fine tooth comb through our choices and analysing whether they are true to our values and integrity.
Through this line of inquiry, we are able to question:
“If I train with a constant full send mindset, then what else am I doing with this same attitude?”
“If I believe that my abilities are fixed in the gym, then where else am I stifling my potential to progress?”
“What if I committed to doing the opposite of what I always do – what would be the product?”
If you are able to recognise at least one new aspect and uncover a new layer of self, by applying the above message, then it has served its purpose.
“How you do anything is how you do everything”.
Remember that!
