Don’t blame your strategy.
Blame your fitness.
We get hung up on the wrong metrics.
As a result, we miss the point.
This is a practice. I have failed many times in years past.
Correction: I fail all the time at this. Weekly.
After a brief period of reflection however, I’m reminded:
It wasn’t my score or strategy that mattered.
It was my fitness (or lack thereof) that did.
We all become obsessed with strategy and score when the CrossFit Open rolls around.
While I believe this has a net positive effect, there will always be some amongst us who instead of using the Open as an objective gauge and reflection of fitness, will perpetually re-do a workout to get a better score, blame a poorly executed strategy, or god forbid, a lack of wod-wax on the pull-up bar.
A workout strategy allows us to maximise our output without any actual change in our fitness.
The idea that if I break up my thrusters into 3 sets and you hold on to go unbroken yet finish slower does not imply that I am stronger or fitter than you.
Only that I can “hack” my through a workout to produce a desired outcome more effectively; a better score.
This is an illusion. We convince ourselves we are better because of it.
But we’re not.
Maybe we just got lucky. Maybe we have a few more years worth of experience under our belt.
But better? Fitter?
No.
Start gauging your performances on measurements that actually give you room to improve.
Strategy might be relevant to the guys at the top, and it might be relevant for you. But probably not as much as you think it is.
So instead of worrying about how you’re breaking up your wall balls next workout, pay attention to how the wall ball feels.
Do you feel strong? Consistent? Calm?
When do things break down?
Why is this so?
These are better questions. They are questions of fitness, work capacity, muscular endurance, and aerobic thresholds.
These are the metrics of your performance.
If the intent is to actually progress, direct your focus here.
Not on your strategy or score.
